Stavolta ad avventurarsi nel settore delle scienze della vita \u00e8 lo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arl.army.mil\/www\/default.cfm\">US Army Research Lab<\/a> (ARL) che punta nel prossimo decennio a integrare sempre pi\u00f9 l\u2019elettronica delle tecnologie delle forze armate con componenti biologiche. <strong>L\u2019obiettivo \u00e8 sviluppare tecnologie flessibili, adattabili, espandibili a potenzialit\u00e0 precluse al mondo prettamente di silicio.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Immaginate di avere a disposizione cellule in cui vengono inseriti elementi artificiali di elettronica. Potrebbero essere usate per biofabbricare materiali innovativi (nanostampa 3D), oppure come sensori per rivelare la presenza di inquinanti, o ancora per interagire con il corpo umano, promuovendo alcune sue capacit\u00e0 o curandolo con maggiore precisione e ridotti effetti collaterali. Queste solo alcune delle possibilit\u00e0 aperte da <strong>applicazioni bioibride<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I modelli biologici tradizionali non bastano pi\u00f9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tra i principali promotori del settore troviamo <strong>Bryn Adams<\/strong>, biotecnologa dell\u2019ARL del Maryland. Autrice dell\u2019articolo <a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acssynbio.6b00256\"><em>The Next Generation of Synthetic Biological Chassis<\/em><\/a>, pubblicato su ACS Synthetic Biology, sottolinea come <strong>le frontiere della biologia sintetica<\/strong> stiano progressivamente superando le capacit\u00e0 offerte dai tradizionali modelli di studio, uno su tutti il batterio Escherichia coli.<\/p>\n<p>Per decenni questo semplice organismo \u00e8 stato l\u2019hardware prescelto per ogni sorta di studio, test e manipolazione genetica. Oggi, tuttavia, con i nuovi metodi di ingegneria genetica, stiamo realizzando sequenze genetiche estremamente complesse che necessitano di nuovi \u201cveicoli\u201d attraverso cui esprimersi. Non pi\u00f9 l\u2019Escherichia coli, ad esempio. Da un lato sarebbero capaci di interagire autonomamente, come gi\u00e0 fanno adattandosi dinamicamente ai suoi cambiamenti, con il mondo esterno. La loro natura chimica permetterebbe poi di interfacciarli con elementi elettronici. Questi ultimi diventerebbero come ulteriori ed esotici organuli, da aggiungersi a quelli gi\u00e0 presenti in natura. Di fatti <strong>come aggiungere una protesi robotica ad un corpo umano<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I ricercatori potrebbero anche <strong>programmare i batteri<\/strong>, o mediante modifiche al DNA grazie a metodi di biologia sintetica o grazie al controllo degli elementi abiotici (la parte elettronica), per creare popolazioni di microorganismi coordinati come un piccolo esercito in grado di soddisfare determinate funzioni o attivit\u00e0. Per fare tutto questo, entra in gioco il lavoro della Adams e dei suoi collaboratori per creare la prossima generazione di organismi capaci di sopportare richieste pi\u00f9 estreme e soddisfare le necessit\u00e0 umane.<\/p><div id=\"start-4112058789\" class=\"start-ann_3_4_paragrafo start-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3991621000685762\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3991621000685762\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"8463779802\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Una biologia sempre pi\u00f9 simile all\u2019informatica<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bisogner\u00e0 selezionare i ceppi naturali pi\u00f9 resistenti e allo stesso tempo espandere ancora pi\u00f9 le nostre capacit\u00e0 di alterare il DNA, creandolo anche da zero, esattamente come fosse un linguaggio di programmazione. Un parallelo simile gi\u00e0 esiste, si chiama <a href=\"http:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2016\/programming-language-living-cells-bacteria-0331\"><strong>Cello<\/strong><\/a> ed \u00e8 uno dei primi linguaggi di programmazione che viene convertito in sequenza genetica poi trasferita in ospiti biologici. L\u2019editing della vita dovr\u00e0 essere spinto ai limiti del possibile.<\/p>\n<p>Per farlo l\u2019ARL sta collaborando con numerosi specialisti e istituzioni quali il MIT, dove il <a href=\"https:\/\/be.mit.edu\/directory\/christopher-a-voigt\">Prof. Chris Voigt<\/a> ha sviluppato un nuovo metodo di trasferimento di DNA, facilitando la riprogrammazione delle cellule. Oltre a questo, sono in fase di sviluppo anche tecniche per registrare costantemente lo stato di vitalit\u00e0 dei microorganismi. Quando portate in condizioni estreme, infatti, sar\u00e0 fondamentale poter capire se le cellule continuano a funzionare e a reagire al mondo circostante come atteso.<\/p>\n<p>Tra le prime applicazioni, l\u2019ARL vede nei microorganismi bioibridi utili <strong>strumenti per potenziare i soldati in guerra<\/strong>. Potrebbero servire a ridurre infezioni, aumentare la resistenza, curare le ferite. Scenari da fantascienza, se non fosse che una sempre pi\u00f9 ingente quantit\u00e0 di investimenti viene orientata per costruire esattamente questo futuro.
