Da un lato il design thinking che si basa sulla possibilit\u00e0 di operare a partire da un set di strumenti standard con cui realizzare nuovi prodotti, strettamente legati a necessit\u00e0 individuate sul mercato.<\/p>\n<p>Dall\u2019altra la biologia, fatta s\u00ec di esperimenti rigorosi, ma caratterizzata da un oggetto di studio, la materia vivente, estremamente dinamico e ancora difficilmente prevedibile a differenza di campi quali l\u2019ingegneria. Eppure all\u2019inizio di Giugno, la startup ha ricevuto un <strong>round C di ben 100 milioni di dollari\u00a0<\/strong>per realizzare il suo obiettivo, che si aggiungono ai primi investimenti ottenuti 2 anni fa nell\u2019acceleratore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ycombinator.com\/\">Y Combinator<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Automatizzare il laboratorio per liberare la creativit\u00e0 dei biologi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La soluzione per farlo Ginkgo Bioworks l\u2019ha cercata, e sembra trovata, nella <strong>robotica.<\/strong> Il laboratorio biologico \u00e8 stato interamente ripensato in chiave digitale. Nella sede dell\u2019azienda, un\u2019armata di robot \u00e8 impegnata costantemente a ripetere le infinite combinazioni di metodi e passaggi finora in mano ai ricercatori umani.<\/p>\n<p>Ricercatori che finalmente possono dedicarsi non solo alla manualit\u00e0 degli esperimenti ma soprattutto alla progettazione della ricerca, vissuta come attivit\u00e0 davvero creativa e intellettuale.\u00a0<strong>L\u2019automazione del laboratorio<\/strong>,inoltre, permette non solo di risparmiare tempo ma anche di rendere ogni processo pi\u00f9 preciso e riproducibile. Standard, la parola d\u2019oro cos\u00ec agognata in biologia.<\/p>\n<p>Grazie ai robot tra cui l\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/www.labcyte.com\/products\/liquidhandling\/echo-525-liquid-handler\">Echo 525<\/a>, microorganismi quali batteri e lieviti vengono <strong>modificati geneticamente<\/strong>, aggiungendo o rimuovendo specifici geni dal loro DNA, in modo da programmarli a svolgere specifiche funzioni come il rilascio di prodotti chimici utili al mercato.<\/p>\n<p>Modificare il loro genoma (o meglio editare) \u00e8 un po\u2019 come montare delle costruzioni Lego usando dei mattoncini di base (geni) per poi inserirli in macchine in cui questi possano funzionarecorrettamente (le cellule). Uno spazio di 70 mila m<sup>2<\/sup> che sar\u00e0 dedicato a realizzare prodotti biologici per i <strong>settori dell\u2019alimentazione e della farmacologia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Come dichiarato da Jason Kelly, cofondatore di Ginkgo Bioworks \u2013 \u201cQueste industrie non sono ancora disruptive come quella del software, perci\u00f2 rappresentano una grande opportunit\u00e0. Man mano che miglioreremo nel riprogettare la biologia, la useremo per fare di tutto, rivoluzionando settori a cui l\u2019industria tecnologica non \u00e8 stata ancora in grado di accedere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In questo momento, Ginkgo Bioworks si presenta come <strong>un\u2019industria automatizzata di prodotti bioderivati<\/strong>. Tra questi,in collaborazione con la casa cosmetica francese <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertet.com\/\">Robertet<\/a> sta sviluppando profumi rilasciati da lieviti modificati. Il profumo in questione \u00e8 quello di rosa, costoso quando deve essere estratto tradizionalmente dai petali di rosa. Diventa invece tutto pi\u00f9 facile quando i geni responsabili del profumo vengono inseriti in opportuni ceppi di lievito che da quel momento rilasciano costantemente il metabolita chimico alla base dell\u2019aroma.
